✈️ RGS Strikes Gold at the National Air Race! 🥇

Earlier this year, the RGS Physics Team organised a two-day Aviation Workshop for 36 students, introducing them to aviation through hands-on learning in flight planning, navigation, and teamwork.
Following the workshop, one team was selected to represent RGS at the National Air Race: Girls Team Category, an annual competition that challenges participants to plan flight routes, make strategic decisions under pressure, and apply their aviation knowledge.
We are proud to share that our team achieved the Gold Award at this year’s competition!
Powered by dedication, resilience, and teamwork, our students have shown what authentic Physics learning can achieve. Here’s to inspiring more girls to take flight in aviation and Physics!
Personally I feel that the Top Gun Aviation Program was an extremely educational programme that not only taught me more about aviation and the technical aspect of flying, but through competition and practical application, connected it to topics that I learnt in physics, expanding my understanding and perking my interest in what I otherwise thought was a topic that had no practical application. Through participating in the programme and the mini air race, I not only had fun, but also learnt about different parts of physics that I had never considered in the practical aspect. Competing in the mini air race taught me how to stay calm under pressure, think strategically, and adapt quickly when things didn’t go as planned. As I had also participated in the programme last year and won the lucky draw, I had the opportunity to visit the Boeing training centre and use one of their flight simulators to have a feel of what it would be like to actually fly a plane. This experience was eye-opening as it allowed me to appreciate the complexity, precision required in engineering, and the responsibility that comes with operating advanced technology. This entire thing was honestly a really unique experience that I personally feel taught me a lot not only academically, but also as an individual, teaching me teamwork, and resilience that extended beyond the technicalities of aviation. Overall, the programme wasn’t just an academic enrichment; it cultivated curiosity, confidence, and a deeper appreciation for how classroom knowledge translates into the real world.— Sarah Teo (401)
During the programme, we learnt about the physics behind aircraft flight, such as lift, thrust and drag, and how these concepts apply in real-world aviation. It was interesting to see how the science we study in class can be directly connected to something interesting like flying a plane. One of the highlights of the programme was using the flight simulator and we were provided with a joystick to control the aircraft. We learnt how to take off, maintain altitude and land safely. On the second day, a mini air race was organised, and surprisingly, my team placed first. This gave us the opportunity to participate in the National Air Race Competition. As the pilot, I had to stay calm and make quick adjustments while my teammates supported me with calculations and directions. This experience strengthened my teamwork skills and boosted my confidence. Overall, the programme was both educational and fun, and I would highly recommend it to students who are interested in physics/science, aviation, or who want to try out something new.— Shannon Ker (314)
