PHILOSOPHY/RATIONALE

EDK_4702.jpg
The curriculum is designed for our students to understand and apply mathematical concepts for effective problem solving. It is grounded in the view that the study of Mathematics is not just about rules and procedures, but also about seeking truth and beauty in patterns and logic, and solving problems which are modelled after real-life scenarios.

Key Understandings
Students will understand that

  • Mathematics is a language consisting of carefully defined terms and symbols
  • Mathematics involves formulation of hypotheses, conjectures, verifications and proofs
  • Mathematics is the study of patterns and relationships
  • Mathematics is a tool used to solve problems in real life
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the students will be able to

  • Apply mathematical concepts, principles and logic to solve problems
  • Think independently, creatively and critically in the formulation of original and elegant solutions
  • Use information and communications technology (ICT) to enhance learning
  • Acquire an appreciation of the beauty of Math, and the traits and dispositions of mathematicians
 Programmes
Mathematical ideas are grouped into 5 strands:

  • Arithmetic
  • Algebra and Functions
  • Geometry and Trigonometry
  • Probability & Statistics
  • Calculus

They are taught in the following manner:

YEAR 1 & 2

  • Arithmetic
  • Algebra and Functions
  • Statistics
  • Geometry and Trigonometry
  • Statistics

YEAR 3 & 4

  • Algebra and Functions
  • Probability & Statistics
  • Geometry and Trigonometry
  • Calculus
