Reading in the 21st Century – Towards a Model for Summarising Non-Continuous Texts

Project Type: Academic Research
Discipline: English Language
Duration: 01/2015 - 12/2015
Domain: Pedagogical Approaches

Abstract:

The need to summarize what is read and viewed in continuous and non-continuous texts will be explored. Two considerations will be held constant in this study: (i) the need to teach visual literacy in the second year of a four-year instructional programme called ‘English language’; (ii) the need to adhere to using Brown & Day (1981) to teach summarizing skills. In the process, two products will be designed and developed: (1) a model for students to communicate their comprehension of non-continuous texts; (2) a model for teachers to score such student work.
