From 2016, Singapore’s Higher Chinese O’ Level Syllabus will have an added Oral component for the first time in history . After viewing a short video clip, students have to present a verbal report based on the content of the clip, then engage in a discussion component with the Main Examiner. To Chinese teachers, gathering video content for practice, assessing students’ performance and carrying out the discussion component is a big challenge because of lack of familiarity with this mode of assessment. In Raffles Girls’ School, Oral practices work towards the goal of strengthening students’ content and expression. To teachers and students alike, Oral preparation is a work-in-progress, with much room for learning in this area of research. This project aims to address three main areas of the Oral component: resources, utilisation and enhancement.
